“From The Fig Tree” is about two times when Jesus teaches a lesson asking His disciples to think about a fig tree. The first was a tree that responded to a curse that Jesus spoke which turned into teaching about faith and prayer. The second was when Jesus was in the Temple teaching about His second coming. How does the fig tree connect us to the “Good News” according to Mark?
Jesus prepares His disciples for what is to come during Holy Week, and on Thursday night He shares a sacred meal. It is a meal that connects us to Good News about Jesus that Mark shares in his writing. And today it is a meal that equips us to keep following Jesus.
In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus says that His blood is “poured out.” What is poured out? The blood of “the new covenant”. And why is it poured out? It is poured out “for many.” These words take us back to the first covenant God makes with His people and forward to the mission of God’s people, today.
