Each year, after the President of the United States issues a proclamation calling on American citizens at home and abroad to set aside the fourth Thursday of November as a day of thanksgiving, we respond at Bethany Lutheran Church by doing this the best way we know how. When we gather together for worship, each year, I like to ask the congregation what they are thankful for as part of the sermon. This year, I'd like to frame that testimony with words of Psalm 147. I was inspired to use this Psalm after reading a little known sermon from Charles Spurgeon from a sermon book called "Talks to Farmers." I intend to follow the Rev. Spurgeon's outline and meditate first on God's gracious work by nature and then use the same words from the Psalm to talk about God's gracious work by the Holy Spirit. In between, the congregation will be invited to testify about God's work in our lives and give thanks for the blessings we enjoy from His Almighty hand.
